Shot-filled head
Loose steel shot kills the bounce, so the energy goes into the board instead of back up your arm.
Faces that thread off
Ships with soft orange and medium brown. Standard 3/8" thread, so caps swap onto most common mallet brands too.
Turned hickory
Ring-cut grip that stays put in a sweaty glove. Straight grain under a clear urethane coat, so it sheds finish, glue, and sweat instead of soaking them up.
Wear it out, don't throw it out
The face goes. The hammer stays.
Every face threads into the head on a steel stud. When one mushrooms out, back it off and thread on a fresh one. The head and handle you bought on day one are the ones you'll be swinging in ten years.

Why this hammer exists
We laid the floors. Then we built the hammer.
I ran a hardwood flooring company. My crews laid oak, maple, and hickory year-round, and every season we burned through the same throwaway mallets: faces chewed up, heads working loose, another run to the supply house.
So we set out to build the hammer I actually wanted to hand my installers. We tried heads, handles, and faces until we settled on this one: a 2.3 lb shot-filled dead blow that lands soft on a finished edge, a 15" urethane-coated hickory handle, and caps on a standard 3/8" thread so you replace the part that wears, not the tool.
It's named after Otis, my dog, the mastiff on the logo. Big, steady, and impossible to knock over. Same idea.
